A 4GB RAM for high performance for software developers. And for multi-tasking and media you may opt for a laptop that has at least a 6 GB RAM. In case a gamer who wants to play flawlessly a minimum of 16 GB will be kick ass stuff.
The faster your hard drive the better it would perform. You need find the right balance based on your needs, a 320 GB hard drive would be perfect to store a few games or movies. But a 500 GB or a 720 GB hard drive would also be easier on your pocket.
You need to think on how much you work you would perform. If you are multi-tasking, like playing online games and work too then you should definitely go for a solid state drives and don’t spending some extra bucks.
